Experiencing god through our 5 senses
Dear BG, I love this series that you have been sharing, and how personal God is in revealing Himself to those who are truly hungry for more of Him. I've heard of experiences like what you mentioned in this post, but personally I haven't had this kind of divine encounter. But the electricity and burning heat feeling has been awesome to experience. Right now as I am typing this comment and while I was reading your post as well as the first three on this seriesI have "goose" bumps and I know God is near.
I praise God for how you take time to share! Post a Comment. Fragrant scents fill the atmosphere in springtime, reminding of blossoming buds, pollinating plants, billowing breeze, and drizzling droplets of rain.
Not only is Creation filled with vibrant colors, diverse tactile experiences, and soothing sounds but many varied scents. The Creator reveals Himself as the Grand Artist of the universe, and our God delights in displaying Himself to those who would desire to know Him by hearing Himfeeling Himseeing Himsmelling Him and tasting Him.Cisco iwan ppt
Presently, I have had only one olfactory experience, but God used that experience to break a chain that had attempted to bind me. God clearly spoke in the fall ofasking me, "Will you still love and trust Me if you can't feel Me? I continued to see Him through dreams and visions and hear His voice directing, encouraging and warning, but my Beloved did not allow me to feel His touch.
This "no feeling Him" season continued through the winter and spring ofa year which God had promised would be one of "New Beginnings. The battle in my mind continued to intensify, and I began imploring my Bridegroom to touch me again. August arrived, and with that, I served as one of the youth leaders for the Fuel Ministry's annual youth conference "Burn.
I just continued to draw near to Him. During the first worship session of "Burn," I was again battling the evil one in my mind. Evil started casting up past sins, ones already repented of and forgiven by Jesus. Responding to the accusations, I reminded the evil one of the purity provided for me by Jesus.
It was during this battle when a fellow youth leader friend, M. My friend said, "The scent of vanilla is strong, and it's coming from you. I began to ask Jesus to allow me to smell this heavenly scent, and faintly the sweet smell of vanilla was detected.
After the service I asked my friend what vanilla means, and she directed me to speak with Pastor J. Pastor J. Jesus hadn't been perceptibly touching me, but He did allow me to sense Him through smellreminding me of the purity He alone can bestow! My soul was overcome with love for my Jesus!!! The next afternoon while riding the bus to get to the evening session of "Burn," I suddenly began to feel Jesus like electricity on my skin.
Oh, how thankful, I was to feel Him once again!!!! Since I have had only one olfactory experience, I gathered reports from other lovers of Jesus and their experiences. Livin ' Life reported smelling fresh baked bread a few times during prayer Jesus is the Bread of life, Johnand Livin's husband, smelled a sweet floral fragrance, unlike that of earthly perfume.
One man is my church smells freshly tilled ground on someone when they are ready to receive Jesus!!! Jesus, we want to experience all that You desire to reveal! However You choose to reveal Yourself, we receive You!!! Open up our senses to You, cause us to know You in a personal way!!!!Mar Posted by Marcy. How long has it been since you stopped to thank God for your five senses? Or however many you still have, though their strength may be waning? Hearing, sight, taste, smell and touch were given to us for a reason.
Do you realize that God gave us these amazing sensing devices to enable us to connect with Him and the rest of His creation? I grabbed twenty minutes on our deck today to soak-in the sunshine; closing my eyes to experience my senses more fully. I both heard and felt the wind and was warmed by the sun, despite the degree air temperature registered on the thermometer.
Shutting out sight, I listened for other sounds besides the swoshing wind in the budding deciduous trees and the towering pines. I heard the tinkling of the wind chimes hanging beneath our deck, the piercing call of a blue Jay, the delicate music of a songbird, the caw of a crow, the barking of a dog at the local SPCA, the metallic sound of our bird feeder swinging on its post, the swinging wind-directional gizmo affixed to the deck rail, voices of young children, and the sound of light traffic in the distance.
When I opened my eyes, I saw the bright yellow sunlight which added a glow to the rather barren early spring landscape and highlighted the reddish leaf buds on the maple tree. I also spotted our dog, LeeRoy, enjoying a lounge in the sun, which made me smile; he likes the sun as much as I do.
Yet we spend little time in the enjoyment of the created order around us. If everything around us came from an explosion in the universe, what accounts for the various colors, shapes, fragrances, sounds, tastes and almost innumerable varieties of animals, insects, fish, plants, rocks, and landscapes?
What came first, sounds or ears to hear the sounds? The beautiful array of colors and shapes, or eyes to see them? The sweet, bitter, salty, tangy, and savory flavors, or the taste buds to enjoy them? The myriads of hard, soft, squishy, smooth, rough or prickly things, or the sense of touch to experience each one and to distinguish one from the other?
Our God is a relational Being who designed a world to be enjoyed by His human creations. He wants us to take the time to relate to this world, to each other, and to Him.Sinhala badu number
And He gave us the fine senses to enable us to do so. It was the story of Helen Keller, born blind and deaf, who was taught to communicate through the sense of touch, even learning to speak aloud. Touch freed this young girl to receive messages from the world around her and to learn to relate to others living in her world. As Paul continues in Eph. This spiritual 6 th sense gives us an in-depth relationship with God, and an ever deepening relationship with other people and the created world in which we live.
So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
Are they moving you to a greater awe of God? Try this week to sense God with all your sensing facilities; draw close to Him as you observe the wonders of His creation which surrounds you. Engaging God with all 5 senses can truly help our faith grow. Historically the evangelical church has shied away from using senses aside from auditorybut perhaps there is something to be learned from more ancient traditions. It comes every year: cinnamon-scented air, delicious desserts eaten without regrets, knitted sweaters snuggling our upper bodies in warmth, bright lights twinkling from eavestroughs, familiar songs being played in every building. I think the reason we love Christmas so much has something to do with the sensory experiences we enjoy every year, and that those sensory experiences have become traditions.
For the ancient Jews, the sense of smell was a key part of tradition of worship. In fact, there was a very special incense blend that was only to be burned in the temple, and anyone replicating it for personal use would be excommunicated.
Yet our evangelical churches typically shy away from using the senses as a way to connect with God. There are some ways that we still do experience God through our senses — partaking of communion evokes our sense of taste, and music requires us to listen. But no longer do we install elaborate stained-glass windows or build soaring cathedrals with intricate artwork that bring us to our knees in awe of the God who inspired them.
But there are people, who Gary Thomas refers to as Sensates, that crave this kind of connection with God. Thomas helps us to think about other ways to connect with God, revealing the other ways God connected with people throughout the Bible and church history. See Sacred Pathways on Amazon. But how does a sensate discover God in a world where our senses so often lead us into narcissism and excess? You may benefit from the use of certain essential oils when you pray. Lavender is both mild and calming — diffusing it or putting a drop on the forehead may help.
After the service, lingering scents remind the believer of the worship experience. After awhile the smell can condition the believer to consciously enter into the presence of God. Instead of sitting with our hands folded and our eyes closed while praying, we can use objects to help us concentrate. For example, holding a jar of baby food may help you pray that your child would be healthy, and that their spiritual nourishment would come from God. Walking through your house and touching doorposts, beds, and the kitchen table would bring a very different, but meaningful prayer experience.
I have recently found it extremely helpful to use Protestant prayer beads to help me connect with God through prayer. You can read more about that here.
Need I say more? Find music that inspires you to greater devotion to God. It might not be modern worship music either — there is some incredible classical music that seems almost divine. Proprioreception is the sense of moving through space.
I also have a little book of prayer stances in my office that I sometimes use with kids, and can also be useful for adults.Rest api pentesting checklist
For example, laying prostrate on the floor lends to different prayers than standing with arms wide open. Learn more about helping your wiggly child learn to pray without making her sit still. Ideas for sensate children can be found on this post.God has a voice. He is constantly speaking. But the messages he sends come through many different channels. Sometimes it is words we hear. Other times it could appear as a vision that we see. For some, it is just acknowledging and knowing the nudges of God.Systems of equations graphic organizer answer key
We have five physical senses. We receive input through sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. We react and interpret the physical realm around us according to the messages received through those senses. As children growing up, we learned a hot stove will hurt. Vinegar tastes sharp and acidic. Bright lights make us squint. Just as our physical sense respond to the environment, our spiritual senses also react.
But like a child, we must understand the signals we receive and how to interpret them. Maturity comes through our relationship with God. Without him, we remain spiritually dense:. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear to this very day. Romans I noted a change in my sensitivity when I accepted Jesus as Savior. My understanding shifted dramatically. The Bible was no longer only a book, but alive and powerful.Better than datatables
My heart beat with a new love for God and all of his creation. My spiritual senses awakened and rose to new levels of awareness. God uses our spiritual senses to communicate with us.
We each have at least one special way to hear from God. He tailors a language unique to our person.
I understood God telling me to be patient with less experienced Christians in the church. We also need to realize that God not only wants to speak to us, he wants to speak through us. His message to us may be ours alone, but his compassion is for everyone. He wants to use us as a conduit of his goodness. So, we must become students of how to hear his voice with clarity. Spiritual Eyes … If your spiritual eyes are activated, you will see pictures in your mind.
They may appear clearly for a period of time or may be just a flash of revelation. Once seen, these images need an interpretation to be applied.Post a Comment. Wednesday, September 23, Experiencing God through the five senses. I recently went for a Wesley counsellors' retreat, and I really liked what one of the counsellors said about experiencing God with our five senses. Most of the time, we use only two senses - sight and hearing.
I was in my hotel room alone during one of the days and so gave myself some time to experience God through my five senses.
I prayed before I started and these were what I wrote on my journal: Sight - An eagle soaring in the sky - A shining sword - Two big caring hands supporting me - Huge white feathers providing me with full cover Taste - Sweeter than honey - Snowflakes landing on the tongue - Softness of a feather - Warm and comforting Smell - The morning air in a dense forest - Fresh and invigorating - Familiar - An apple orchard Touch - Protective and loving - Very gentle like a breath on my skin - Always a hug - Fully enveloped in his love Hearing - Through the Word - Through the Holy Spirit - Through other people - Through incidents and events - Through creation - Through a soft still voice - From my right ear - In my head.

Hearing the Voice of God: The Five Spiritual Senses
He wants you to be reconciled to Him. If you want to be reconciled to God, and begin an exciting relationship with Him, forgiven and free, all you have to do is to say this sinner's prayer with all of your heart. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is your Son, and that he died on the Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and Jesus, I ask you right now to come in to my life and be my personal Lord and Savior.
I repent of my sins and will worship you all the days of my life!. Because your word is truth, I confess with my mouth that I am born again and am cleansed by the blood of Jesus! In Jesus' name, Amen. You have been adopted into His family. To grow in relationship with your Father God, and Christ Jesus your Saviour, find a Spirit-led church and join a community of believers so they can encourage you in your walk!Ever since Christ invited Doubting Thomas—for whom a vision of the resurrected Son of God was not enough—to put his hands into the visible wounds, Christian faith has engaged with all five senses of the body.
Faith most obviously comes through hearing, as St. Paul first taught us. But in ways subtle and sublime it also is related to each of the four other senses, even the sense of smell and taste. Hearing from a personal God: Faith, as Scripture tells us, comes through hearing. But why? Why not reading, for example? This happened in his native city, his new home in the future promised land, and on the mountain where he took Isaac. While it may be lost on modern audiences, in the ancient world this encounter with God through hearing marked the God of the Israelites as a God of the person, rather than a god of place or one associated with a particular situation.

Paul writes and Galatians 2 and Ephesians 3. We cannot see God the Father, but Christ does. Christ did not simply wave his hands over the eyes of the blind man; he rubbed mud into them. The woman who was hemorrhaging was healed by touching His garment. His followers had the opportunity to be touched by Christ, but what about believers today? Benedict invokes the words of Augustine: To touch him with our hearts: that is what it means to believe. If it is through sacraments in general that we are touched by God, it is through the Eucharist that we taste Him.Are you experiencing God through your senses?
Such at least has been the interpretation of Church Fathers like Sts. Athanasius and Augustine, according to the Haydock Bible Commentary. Sweet-smelling sanctity: The sense of smell is closely associated with our faith in many ways. At Mass, incense is used as part of our worship. This reflects the words of Scripture. First, incense was traditionally identified with sacrifice, with God Incarnate has become for our sakes. What does the Bible say about?
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.
Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.
Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment? For as soon as Zion was in labor she brought forth her children. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Do not disbelieve, but believe.
